Texas Bar Journal Article about A Simple Thread.
A SIMPLE THREAD is a non-profit organization created to help homeless individuals in Houston in a unique way.
Homelessness is a problem in Houston. No one disputes that. Individuals who are homeless, though, are not the most widely
targeted group for help in the city. You won't usually see them pictured on fundraising posters. When Houstonians stop to
think about the 12,000 individuals who are homeless in Houston at any given time, they mostly blame the homeless for their
plight.
Yes, there are programs for people who are homeless. There are shelters that provide beds, food, showers, bathrooms, and
shelter. For a variety of reasons, though, many who are homeless do not seek assistance at a shelter. There are soup kitchens
that help the homeless who are hungry. They are a great help, but it can be difficult for homeless individuals to get to the
soup kitchens. There are organizations that offer job training, and this is a blessing for some of the homeless as they work
to put their lives back together. But the fact remains that more than half of Houston's homeless have a serious psychiatric
disability, more than a quarter of Houston's homeless are veterans, and almost 20% of Houston's homeless are under the age
of 18, even though the average age is 42, according to a report by the Houston Coalition for the Homeless.
A Simple Thread does not attempt to end homelessness in Houston. We do not find jobs or houses for people who are homeless.
Most of all, we do not care why or how they became homeless. We are not offering a thick rope as a lifeline. We are offering
a Simple Thread.
We put together small kits -- simple threads -- to make life easier for people who are homeless in Houston. You can find
out more about our kits by going to the "Simple Thread Kits" page.
We distribute these kits directly to individuals who are homeless. They do not have to fill out a form, give out information,
ask for a hand-out, or even say a word. We just give them the kits as a small way to help -- literally from our hands to
theirs. A simple connection. A simple thread.
A Simple Thread does not attempt to solve a massive crisis. Our aim is just to make life a little easier, a little better,
for our neighbors.
We are creating a tapestry -- A SIMPLE THREAD at a time.
